According to a report in the publication American Medical
News, the time that a doctor spends advising a patient to quit smoking can be
very effective. In fact, studies have shown that it only takes three minutes of
a doctor’s time to have a positive impact on the smoker. This is especially
significant given results of one study that showed that only one in five
physicians advises patients who are known smokers to quit.
If every physician advised every patient at every visit to not smoke, one
million Americans could escape nicotine addiction each year according to Michael
C. Fiore, M.D., MPH, director of the University of Wisconsin Medical School’s
Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention. This could lower the incidence of
heart disease, since smoking is a risk factor for heart disease that can be
eliminated, unlike several other risk factors.
Smoking kills more Americans each year than AIDS, drugs, car accidents, and murder COMBINED! Over 419,000 people in America die each year from smoking related illnesses. Second hand smoke kills 53,000 NON-SMOKERS each year. Children whose parents smoke are more likely to suffer from pneumonia, bronchitis, ear infection, and asthma. If you smoke, please quit. Your life, and the health of those you love, depends on it! PPSI has developed the following information about smoking to help you understand the issues involved in this killer addiction.
